Stefan Drew made 30 saves in Saturday's 4-0 win at the Milford Ice Pavilion over Canisius. The win clinched a weekend sweep on the Golden Griffiths . This was the sophomore goalie's first game back after missing time due to a broken hand.

Stefan Drew's broken right hand had forced Sacred Heart coach Shaun Hannah to ride starting goalie Jason Smith for 16 straight games.

The backup goalie made his return to the lineup with a bang Saturday night as the Pioneers shut out Canisius 4-0 in front of 446 at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

The shutout was the first of the season for Drew and the second of his career. His first came on Feb. 4, 2006, against Army.

"It was a big lift for us," Hannah said of Drew, who stopped all 30 shots the Golden Griffins fired on the sophomore. "He hasn't played in a while. We have two great goalies here, and it is good for (Drew) to step up and get us a win because we needed the points tonight."

Four different Pioneers scored goals and nine different players tallied points as Sacred Heart, which led 2-0 after a period, improved to 15-7-4, 12-4-4 AHA. Canisius fell to 6-19-2, 6-13-2 AHA.

"It is important for us to have the depth in the lineup," Hannah said. "It's tough to win when you only have one line. Good balance is a key to winning."

The Pioneers' penalty-killers knocked off seven Canisius power plays, and scored a shorthanded goal. Sacred Heart also was 1-of-2 on the power play.

"The shorthanded goal was a bonus," Hannah said. "Our penalty kill was very good tonight, which is good because we took some penalties."

Both teams combined for 47 minutes in penalties.

The Pioneers will return to action on Friday night at 7 at the Milford Ice Pavilion against UConn.
