A mascot is any person, animal or object thought to bring luck. Colleges are often referred to by their mascot. Now Sacred Heart will as well have a representing mascot.
"Student interviews went well," said Student Body President, Jim Daly.
"People are pumped for this. Training begins next week. The students that were selected will be learning basically 'how to be a mascot," said Daly.
A student was selected to represent Sacred Heart. No names are being given out in hopes of keeping the new school mascot a secret.
Having the school mascot a mystery is part of the fun, always pondering who is in that funny costume jumping and dancing around, pumping the crowd with never ending energy.
The mascot will be making various appearances at Sacred Heart's sporting events. You can expect to see the mascot at Hockey, Baseball, Volleyball, and Basketball games throughout the semester, "you name it he'll be there."
The job of the mascot, other than the obvious, is to pump up the crowd, getting people into and enthusiastic for the games, and being a major icon for the University.
It will be the responsibility of the mascot to visit children in local hospitals, appearing at store openings in our area, as well as eventually being apart of the mascot games on ESPN.
"Yes, I think it's a good idea and it will definitely bring more spirit to SHU....most other schools have a mascot and benefits from it in different ways. I think we'd just come together even more as a community with it," said Monika Auwaeter, sophomore, Londonderry, N.H.
"I think that by having a mascot it will enlarge the crowd as well as make the already present crowd more dominant," said Matthew Telvi, sophomore Class President
"School spirit, I believe, helps with home field advantage and driving our players to do their best. I think by adding this mascot it will help make our school be at the higher level of Division I athletics and can be compared to the big name schools that are out there," said Telvi.
