Usually when Jason Smith blocks 35 out of 36 shots the Pioneers can find a way to win. This Saturday's game against Air Force, however, was a slightly different story. The game ended in a 1-1 tie marking the second straight tie for both teams.

All the action was in the first period, with both teams scoring their only goal. If the pace had remained the same there could have been a clear winner, but both Smith and Air Force net minder Peter Foster saw things a little bit differently.

Although the goaltending was superb there were many squandered opportunities to pull ahead and grab the victory.

Once again penalty killing was the downfall for the Pioneers. The only goal for Air Force came with a man advantage when an offensive zone face-off found its way to the stick of Josh Schaffer who blasted it past the otherwise perfect Jason Smith.

On the other side of the coin, Sacred Heart once again was not able to capitalize on its own man advantages. One critical missed opportunity came in the second period when the Pioneers failed to convert on a 5-on-3 power play that could have won them the game.

Although there was not much of it, the scoring that the Pioneers did was more of what has made Sacred Heart one of the league's top scoring offenses.

With 4:25 left in the first period freshman Dave Jarman, Toronto, ON, picked up the loose puck in the offensive zone and passed it to senior Peter Ferraro, Pleasantville, N.Y., who rifled a quick shot on net. Although Foster stopped the shot, freshman Matt Gordon, Lynnfield, Mass., was right there to put in the rebound.

Even though it was the only goal in the game for the Pioneers it showed that they still have the teamwork and cohesiveness that has given the team a reason to be happy.

The great work from the freshmen has also been a bright spot for the team, and is something that will bring in some great recruits next year, as well as keep the team in its spot as one of the top contenders.
