Internships not only prepare students and make their resumes more attractive to the eyes of future employers, but also provide students with enriching experiences that they may not be get outside of the classroom.
Internships give students an idea of how a workplace typically operates and provides a competitive edge for when the time finally comes for them to branch out into the "real" working world.
Sacred Heart Career Placement Advisor for the Office of Career Development Heather Marchand said, "Internships are very important for students to participate in as it offers the student a real-life opportunity to experience the industry first hand and find out what they like and dislike."
The work experience that a student obtains while in college can have potentially phenomenal rewards which include: a higher starting salary, greater variety in job offers, and more frequent promotions.
Dr. Stephen Lilley, professor of Sociology, Woodbridge, said in regards to the importance of interning with relation to the Sociology major.
"Our program is revising the sociology major and an important new change will be the requirement of an internship," Lilley said. "We are adopting a much more applied approach and we believe that an internship provides an opportunity to deepen knowledge through real-world experience. Also, it can provide a bridge between college and career, most importantly by allowing students to observe professionals and by trying out a line of work for themselves."
Employers often find they have an abundance of students fresh out of undergraduate school with the theoretical knowledge of their specific field, but who lack the transferable skills which are deemed equally significant.
