How exactly does this relate to a totally different team in completely different sport? Lets go back and find out.
The year is 1984 and the Portland Trailblazers are on the clock with the second pick in the draft. All-star center Hakeem Olojowan was taken first and now Portland is faced with a decision. In what some call one of the most boneheaded moves in sports history, the Blazers select C Sam Bowie from Kentucky.
Why is this pick such a travesty?
Well considering that the next pick by the Chicago Bulls was a 6'6 guard from North Carolina who goes by the name of Michael Jordan.
Jordan went on to win six NBA championships and NBA Final's MVP awards. He was also five-time league MVP and is considered to be the best basketball player ever, even the best athlete in the history of sports.
Bowie played ten seasons for three different teams, never winning a championship or MVP award.
Well after that sports history lesson, its back to the year 2006 and back to football. With the new season under way, men are wondering who will play to impress more, Mario or Reggie and if football will have a Bowie-Jordan debate of their own.
For those of you who think that Williams was the smart pick and will help the Texans more than Bush will, please go watch one highlight from Bush's college, high school, or pee wee football career and then see what you think.
Now certainly the Texans new about the hype over Reggie Bush and the fact he has incredible talent and a shot at becoming one of the NFL's better players. So why did they pass on Bush?
Some say it was the fact that they had a running back in Dominick Davis. Davis, who was expected to have a breakout year in 2005 spent much of the season hurt and to top it off hurt himself again this season and will not play again until next year.
Now the Texans are relying on the fantastic Ron Dayne to carry the workload in the backfield this season. Good Times.
