The Pioneers soccer team traveled to Wisconsin this past weekend for the Nike Soccer Classic and split the two games, losing to Green Bay on Saturday, but came back to win against Georgia State on Sunday afternoon.
After going into over time on Saturday afternoon, the Green Bay Phoenix beat out Sacred Heart 2-1. The game ended after 104 minutes with a game- winning goal by Green Bay's sophomore defender Ray Hibbler.
In the first half of the game the ball never made it into the net on either side. It wasn't until the second half that Sacred Heart's freshman Jesper Fredricksson scored a goal with a header assisted by sophomore Jason Tessitore. This was Fredricksson's fourth goal of the season and his team leading fourth marker of the year.
Phoenix then tied the game in the 78th minute when Mike McCormacks tallied his second goal of the season. The Pioneers defense made a good attempt to again the University of Wisconsin but struggled and was not able to defend McCormack's powerful shot.
Both teams made attempts to score in the final minutes, but neither was able to put the ball in the net, so the game went into overtime. Sacred Heart had a few chances to score but was never able to make it into the net. Then in the 104th minute of the game, Josh Okampa had a break away through the Pioneers and kicked the ball directly to Hibbler and he slammed it into the net, winning the game for the Phoenix.
Even though Matthew Jones made eight saves against Green Bay, the Phonenix were too powerful and out shot the Pioneers 17-13 enabling them to win the game. The tournament was not over yet for the Pioneers, and went on the face the Georgia Sate Panthers the next morning.
Sunday the Pioneers took the win over Georgia State in a 3-1 victory. Fredricksson scored twice more, giving him his sixth goal of the season and the third game-winner for the Pioneers.
In the first 25 minutes of the game Fredricksson was able to dribble the ball close to the net and slam the ball past the Panthers goaltender Paulo Gutierrez.
