This past Saturday, the Sacred Heart men and women's cross country teams both traveled to the Bronx NY to compete in the Fordham Ram Invitational Saturday afternoon at Van Cortland Park, the site of the 2006 Northeast Conference Championship.
This is one of the team's first competitive meets this season following a hard preseason filled with rigorous and intense workouts held by the team's head coach Christian Morrison, who is in his 13th season at the helm of the Sacred Heart men and women's track program.
The teamed faired well placing second overall for the entire meet. The men came in second in the seven-team field behind the winner from Southern Connecticut State University. The women finished behind Stony Brook in an eight-team race.
The squad had a lot of individual success form there runners. From the men's team Sophomore David Jones led the SHU men, finishing 11th overall with a time of 28:34. Right on his heels was freshman Ryan Murdoch in 12th clocking in at 28:41.
The Pioneers had three other runners finish inside the top-20 with Brendan Rickert coming in 14th with a time of 28:47, Joseph Palma in 16th posting a time of 28:50 and John Kenworthy in 20th with his time of 29:13.Rounding out the SHU top-seven was Steven Zito in 24th at 29:46 and Robert Boertes in 33rd at 30:42.
On the women's side, Sacred Heart's entire top-seven finished in the top-20 runners led by sophomore Kathleen Henry who grabbed her second-straight second place finish.
Henry who not only seems to be the anchor of the cross country squad, she also receives accolades form outside the university when she was named the Northeast Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office. She clocked in at 18:58.
Twin sisters Anne and Katie Duffy followed Henry, finishing fourth and seventh. Anne Duffy who ran a competitive time of 19:42 was followed shortly after her sister Katie who finished with a 20:03.

" I think the team is off to a great start. We have a lot of potential and with the effort that's been given by everyone I see no reason why we can't have a lot of success this season," said Jessica Murphy, a junior from Yonkers, NY.
The starter's pistol has been fired and the 2006 cross-country season is underway. The team has already had a lot of success, and the Pioneers plan to keep putting forth the same effort week in and week out. Look for this team to go along way and put up some great record-breaking numbers this season.
