Arciaga, Pioneers fall to Red Foxes

Tyler Arciaga's lingering shoulder discomfort was a big issue going into Saturday's game against Marist, but by the end of the night, it was the least of the Pioneer football squad's problems.

The Sacred Heart quarterback threw for a season high 283 yards but his efforts weren't enough to keep the Pioneers from falling 28-19 in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The Pioneers, who dropped to 0-2 on the young season, were halted by the Red Foxes rush defense all night and were ultimately held to a dismal 26 yards from the ground.

"Going into the game, we wanted to try and execute what we put in during the week which was to establish our running game and open up our passing attack," said Corey Bundy, a junior wide receiver from Selden, NY. "But Marist made plays which were big momentum builders."

Marist broke a scoreless tie with 10:59 left in the first half when junior Obuzua Ehikioya capped off a 44-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Then, to pull the Pioneers back in the game, sophomore Evin Jones (Pennsauken, NJ) dazzled his way through the Marist special teams and ran a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Despite the longest kickoff return in Sacred Heart's Division I football history, the Red Foxes' were out to show their momentum wasn't taken away. They ferociously proved that when Marist quarterback Steve McGrath hit Tim Keegan with a 16-yard touchdown pass, which inflated the lead to seven. Keegan struck again, but this time connected on a 9-yarder with Kevin Frederick to give the Red Foxes a 21-7 advantage going into the locker room.

"We just need to work on the attitude of the team," admitted Bundy. "We need to work on going into a game with a winning mentality. That's why execution and attitude are key parts of the game."

The second half only got worse for the struggling away team when McGrath hit Prince Prempeh with a 70-yard bomb for a touchdown to increase the Pioneer deficit to 28-7.

Arciaga breathed some new life into his team when he and Bundy connected on a 35-yard scoring strike, but whatever momentum was bred from that air attack was quickly faded when junior running back Jason Payne's 35-yard run into the red zone was taken away because of a holding call. The setback put Sacred Heart in a fourth and nine spot and Arciaga was picked off by the Marist defense.
