Sacred Heart University places high value on experimental learning. The Internship program is a great way to launch this concept.

According to SHU, it is a great opportunity for students to apply their studies to outside organizations, making a more significant contribution. Students engage in internships in all fields, including business and finance, communications, government, healthcare, sales, sciences, social services and information technology.

Internship wages and hours are based on the needs of the employer and student. For-credit academic commitment is typically 10-20 hrs weekly (during the school year) or full-time (during the summer).

"Begin to take responsibility for your career now," says, Patricia "Trish" Klauser, Senior Director of Career Counseling and Interim Executive Director, who has worked at SHU for sixteen years.

"Take a chance, do the research, see a career counselor, notice what energizes you, talk to people about what they do for a living, and test drive what you think you want to do."

According to Career Development, many students that take advantage of SHU's internship program land in high positions at companies. A sports management/Finance major interned with the PGA tour. This student works directly with the Director of Sponsorship and Marketing.

Since most entry-level positions in sports are significantly involved with marketing this experience will help the student in finding full-time employment.

Families who are college shopping marvel over SHU's placement rate (94% to 98% over the last five years); the hard working Career Development staff at SHU always set the goal at 100%.

"We have approximately 2,000 employers, listing just about 3,000 positions on erecruiting, our career management website for SHU students," said Klauser.

"Learning how to write an effective resume and connecting with an employment and career planning advisor is a student's first step for securing an internship.

Today, students need at least 3 internships before they graduate to be competitive with graduates from other schools. So it's important to get connected with your career office, the sooner, the better.

Each and every SHU student should contact a career advisor by the end of their sophomore year. Students that work with Career Development and take advantage of the opportunities leave SHU with an additional advantage," concluded Klauser.
