New British music sensations Arctic Monkeys are likely to hit American music charts by storm.
After setting the record for the largest first week sales of a debut album in U.K. history, Arctic Monkeys are being called, "the most buzzed British exports since tea," by one Spin magazine writer.
Outselling The Beatles, the Arctic Monkeys are a four-piece indie rock band from Sheffield, England. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed the group in 2003, only one year after Turner and Cook received guitars for Christmas.
It is from there, the latest fab four made practicing a priority, often memorizing hits by musical groups like the White Stripes and the Vines. By spring 2004 the Arctic Monkeys were offered a deal with record label, Domino.
Domino is the same label in which the popular bands Franz Ferdinand and Clinic are also signed.
Arctic Monkeys' first two singles, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down," both went straight to number one on the U.K. Singles Chart by October 2005.
Their debut album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not," set top selling records within a day of its U.K. January release date. According to the All Music Guide, the album sold 118,501 copies in the U.K., setting a record for more records sold than the rest of the Top 20 album chart combined.
The band won "Best New Act" at the 2006 Brit Awards, and went down in history at the 2006 New Musical Express Awards by becoming the first band to win "Best New Band" and "Best British Band" in the same year.
"Citing influences like the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths on their myspace site, I think the Arctic Monkeys have created a new punk-inspired sound a lot of people can appreciate," said Jennilyn DeSisto, senior, Trumbull.
People appear to be doing more than just appreciating the new sound creations of the Arctic Monkeys, as the number of Arctic Monkeys fans is steadily increasing.
