At the end of April, the Spring 2006 semester of the Student Government term will be coming to an end. Election packets are already handed out to the student body, and campaigning has begun. The Installation Dinner for new inductees is taking place on April 25, 2006, during which two very special senate awards will be announced. Nominations for these awards took place at last week's senate meeting and the nominees are as follows.
Nominations for the Senate Unsung Hero were Janelle Watson, Justin Schiavone, and Christina Piazza. Janelle was nominated for her outgoing efforts in trying to improve the conditions of Flik for the student body. She has worked with both the management team and with the food service company. She has made many changes, which often go unnoticed. If it were not for her committee's efforts, the student's voices would have gone unheard.
A second nomination for Unsung Hero was Christina Piazza who has put in hours to the Buildings and Grounds Committee. She has worked for two years to coordinate the Beautification Day event which is taking place on April 4, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. Although she goes without thanks and recognition, the work she does is commendable. She has also done much work in addressing individual student concerns, for example directing the contracted snow removal company to clear sidewalks for student safety.
The final nomination for this award is Justin Schiavone. Justin is a senator for the Class of 2008, and has been on several committees in the senate. This semester the majority of his work has been done with the Information Technology Committee. With the help of the IT Department he has organized a channel survey and poled the other senators to find a well-rounded channel line up for next year.
Nominees for the Senator of the Year award are as follows: Aisha Lubin, Justin Gage, and Kelly Linskey. Aisha Lubin is the senate's Judicial Board Chair. She has taken the responsibility of training and guiding the J-Board representatives and meeting with them for the hearings of Student Government members. Because of her contribution to Student Government, there is going to be a new Executive Board position to take care of these essential responsibilities.
Justin Gage has worked with the Academics Committee to seek out new honor societies for the campus. Although he was not able to accomplish the requirements for all of them, he has left his fellow committee members with the tools they will need to succeed in the future. The Honor Society was able to bring to the university was one of his finest accomplishments as a senator. This chapter of the freshmen Honor Society has been installed, and has already organized the class of its founding members.
The final nominee for the Senator of the Year award is Kelly Linskey. She is a senator from the Class of 2008 who has worked with the Public Safety Committee to try to ease parking issues. She has helped students get better security in parking lots and night time escorts.
