New club for history fanatics

A new club has been added to the extensive list of organizations on campus. The History Club has been using the spring semester to establish themselves in the community.

There are already 16 academic clubs established on campus, which provide students with the opportunity to pursue their academic interests outside of the classroom. The History Club, although brand new, is no exception.

The establishment of the History Club has been a work in progress since the spring semester of 2005. Professor Thomas Curran worked with students through the fall of 2005, finally gaining approval for the club over this year's winter break.

"All the other majors had clubs and history didn't. So we felt that this would be a great opportunity for history majors and those just interested in history to get together and really get involved on campus and have fun," said History Club President, Michelle Baillargeon, senior, Voluntown.

After countless Monday night meetings and planning events, the 16-member club has finally started partaking in activities around campus.

Last week the newly established History Club held its first fundraiser; a raffle to win one of two movie baskets, and a new raffle will be in effect within the coming weeks. Because the club is so new, Baillargeon said she was happy just to break even with the initial fundraisers. As the club becomes better known, events will be more successful.

Along with Vice President Katlyn Botsford, Secretary Amanda McLaughlin, Treasurer Lauren Daniels, and CCO representative Mariel Palombo, Baillargeon has been expanding the horizons of the History Club. Over the weekend, the History Club was present at both Pioneer Day and the Siblings Weekend activities.

Long-term goals include creating more field trip opportunities for students. Currently, a trip to the historical Hancock Shaker Village in Mass. is being planned

"We do have several events coming up though including a movie night on April 10 in Holy Grounds and we are participating in "Young at Heart", and event where Bridgeport students will be brought to SHU for a day of activities on the weekend of April 7," said Baillargeon.
