Last week the air was lighter, the clocks were turned forward, and now we don't see the moon rise until seven o'clock. Spring is here! For a college kid, that means summer (and finals) are right around the corner. And for a movie fan (like me), that means the summer movie season is just a blooming flower away. Here is what I think will be worth your ten dollar donation to the local Cineplex.
Summer movies are usually big blockbusters and hilarious comedies. Before getting into the heat of the summer season, there does however, need to be a spring hit, and with that said, I'm looking for "American Dreamz" to be that hit. A spoof on American Idol and President Bush, how can you go wrong? I hope I don't eat my words.
The official summer movie season will open with "Mission: Impossible 3." I hate Tom Cruise, but the movie looks way cool; I'll give him that much. This is sure to be the epitome of the summer blockbuster with explosions, Tom Cruise, scantily clad women, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the villain. This popcorn flick will make or break the rest of the summer season. Since it is the first big movie, movie goers will most likely rank their willingness to blow ten dollars on other movies based on the quality of this one.
On May 19, the blockbusters will continue with the movie adaptation of the best-selling book, "The Da Vinci Code." This may be the exception to the make or break rule. Since so many people have read the book, and since so many people are actually too lazy to read it, the movie offers a different medium to the former and an opportunity into the craze for the ladder. And everyone loves Tom Hanks, that's always a plus.
What would a summer movie season be without the comic book flicks? We've already seen success with "V for Vendetta." Last summer was Batman, and the year before that was Spiderman. This summer, though, is a return to oldies, but goodies. May 26, is the date, "X-Men: The Last Stand," will take aim for the silver screen. This is the last movie in the franchise, as the ensemble is getting too famous and fighting for more money and more screen time. Before Halle Berry won her Oscar, she was Storm, and because of that win, Storm now has a central plotline in the movie. It goes to show, winning an Oscar does do something to your career after all.
