Senior year is the last year of complete freedom before you venture out into the real world and start your future.
While senior year is a time when students start to get teary eyed and shaken up by the rude awakening that you actually have to be a "grown up" soon, it is also a time for last minute partying and living it up before reality hits.
Because SHU does realize that seniors deserve a time for relaxation throughout the busiest year of college, the university provides a night specifically for seniors at the Outpost Pub in Flik.
Students do enjoy spending time at this pub on senior night, but lately, it has been less entertaining and more of a chore.
What was originally meant to be a spot for relaxation has recently caused stress and aggravation.
On a typical night at the Outpost Pub, you can now expect to wait in a line out the door while two forms of ID are being checked by Public Safety officers.
Your name also has to be on a special list that enables you access in to the pub, and if your name is not on the list, you can definitely expect a hard time.
While the Outpost is not normally this strict, certain situations have caused the need for more security.
Recently on a senior pub night, a student was kicked out by a public safety officer.
Although no official statements have been made, there is news that the officer was in the wrong and should not have treated the student they way that he did.
While public safety or any other seniors that attended senior pub night would make a comment, it is safe to say that senior pub night is definitely not what it used to be.
There have been so many complaints about the Outpost, many students are going elsewhere to have a "good" time. Why should a student of age have to be stared down by an officer while drinking when they can go somewhere else and enjoy the last of their nights out as an SHU student?
All in all, the Outpost Pub is definitely not what it used to be. It actually has become ironic in a sense, because a student goes to the pub to keep out of trouble and enjoy a safe, fun night on campus.
In recent cases, there has been no choice but for students to abandon campus and go elsewhere to drink. So before you decide to have a night out with your friends and drink at the pub, think twice. A night of innocent fun may turn into a night of aggravation and possibly even get you in trouble.
