Women's ice hockey will host the University of Rhode Island Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion as the team looks to continue raching up wins in the new year.

Entering the week, Sacred Heart has won its first four games of 2006 against St. Michael's (twice), Holy Cross, and Southern Maine, outscoring its opponents 29-3.

Forwards Jessica Felt and Sarah Turbert combine with defensemen Jane Auxier and Nicole Farrelly to form an experienced core of seniors for the Pioneers. Throughout the season, they have faced the tall order of helping the young team to achieve consistency.

Freshman forward Gina Arnone, who leads the Pioneers with 18 goals and 31 points in 16 games, believes that each of the four has delivered this season, showing the younger players how to excel at college ice hockey.

"Jessica Felt is great to be around, on and off the ice. Her attitude is one to follow and her leadership qualities show," Arnone said.

"Nikki Farrelly is someone to look up to. From her ankle injury that kept her out for nearly a month to her shoulder problems that she has now, she has never given up or lost hope. Fighting through all of that has made her one of the strongest contributors on the team.

Sarah Turbert contributes with her great leadership skills along with her hard work and dedication. Jane Auxier is a solid defenseman both on the power play and penalty kill."

Freshmen Whitney Dziama, Allie Gillman, and Kristina Feltz have also noticed leadership qualities in team captain Auxier, a defenseman from Palm Beach, Fla.

"Jane has given a defined aggressive sense of play in the games, making sure any girl who she's defending is terminated," Dziama said.

"She has taken me under her wing and has helped me step up my game to the level it needs to be at," said Feltz, Auxier's defense partner.

"Jane has been the most helpful senior to the start of my college career. She makes me feel welcome and never has anything bad to say," Gillman said.
