As Sacred Heart University enters into the New Year, the Student Senate is more ambitious than ever to begin getting started with their new goals for the Spring Semester. One of the first things on the list is to help the athletic department increase attendance at sporting events. This past weekend, Senate teamed up with Executive Board to promote for the "Pack the Pitt" event.

Saturday, Jan. 21 was the SHU Athletics Department's double-header of men's and women's basketball. In support of both teams, Student Government President and Vice President of Senate sent out e-mails to attract students to join the Red Wave. This event yielded one of the greatest attendances ever. In an attempt to unify the students, this was an awesome way to start the semester.

Senate has many of its own plans for this semester as well. Beautification Day is something that Senator Christina Piazza began working on in the Fall Semester. This event will be kicking off once the snow has disappeared from the ground after much planning and organization. This event, which is going to be assisted by Buildings & Grounds, is another event to unify students, and hopefully staff too. More information about this event will be published as soon as the date is set.

The Student Senate will also be attending the Leadership Conference on February 4th. In an attempt to learn more about leadership and the many qualities that go along with it, all Senators will go with an open mind and a blank notebook. Things that have been discussed in previous conferences include advertising techniques, eye-appealing student events, productive fundraising ideas, and ways to effectively lead a group of people in a club or organization.

As always, Senate would like to welcome all students to attend weekly meetings which take place on Tuesday nights at 7:40 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. Topics are always student based and meetings are very informative.

Committee Reports are discussed every week and give students a good idea of where progress stands in the departments around campus. New announcements are given every week in "New Business" and include events which are taking place for social pleasure. "Open Forum" always has space for student input, comments, question, and concern. So bring your opinions to the next Student Senate meeting.

Stay posted for the latest, greatest information on what is going on in Student Government in the weeks to come.
