From the Michael Jackson Trial to Hurricane Katrina and the death of Pope John Paul II, 2005 is a year that won't soon be forgotten.

As this year draws to an end students take a look back at what they remembered as the biggest moments of 2005.

On April 2, 2005, one of the most influential men of our time, Pope John Paul II died. He touched many lives, and will never be forgotten.

"The death of Pope John Paul II was really upsetting, he was the only Pope in our lifetime. He was a remarkable leader and an inspiration, not just to Catholics, but to everyone," said Aisling Clancy, senior, Rego Park, N.Y.

One of the most controversial issues this year was the life and death of Terri Schiavo. After 15 years in an "advanced vegetative state," due to severe brain damage, Schiavo's husband decided he wanted to remove her feeding tube and let her pass on.

"It was amazing to see our entire nation showing concern for this women's life," said Christine Kaplan, junior, Cranston, R.I. "People who didn't even know her were fighting for her life."

Despite the efforts of her family and countless others, her feeding tube was not reinserted and Schiavo died March 31.

Lance Armstrong, the poster boy for survival stories, won his seventh Tour de France this year. He is the first man to ever do so.

"I don't think enough can be said about how amazing Lance Armstrong is," said Kurt McLoud, senior, Plymouth, N.H. "I mean to come back from nearly dying of cancer and win, not just one, but seven Tours de France [championships], that's just incredible."

In 1996, Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain. After making a complete recovery, Armstrong went on to win consecutive Tour de France titles from 1999-2005.

This year also saw some of the highest gas prices of all time. $3 a gallon was a regular sight this fall at local gas stations, and driver's wallets took a hit.
