Every year it comes that time when you celebrate day of your birth also known as birthday. Relatives, friends, even strangers sing you the famous tune, "Happy birthday to you," and wish you another great year.

Interestingly, birthdays were not always recognized. The tradition of a birthday was adopted after ancient people started to notice moon cycles and saw a pattern in changing seasons that repeated themselves.

Set calendars have existed for a long time now and our generation has become accustomed to celebrating birthdays with parties, balloons, and presents, but we never questioned their origin. So why do we celebrate birthdays?

Students have thought about the different reasons of why we celebrate birthdays:

"Well, I think it is the celebration of someone's life and they chose to celebrate the day you were born because it is when you began to make a difference in people's lives," said Tiffany Cross-Monzo, senior, Thousand Oaks, CA.

Agreeing with Cross-Monzo, Guy Savage, a senior from Cape Cod, MA, said, "People are celebrating the anniversary of the day you came in their lives, such as parents, etc."

"We celebrate birthdays because we are a gift to the world," says Michelle Bassi, a senior from Fairfield.

"A birthday is an individual holiday," says Natalie Smith a senior from Wantagh, NY. "A birthday is a great way for someone to get together with the people they love and celebrate however they want... to celebrate another year lived and many more to come. To some, birthdays aren't a big deal. To others, getting wasted is how they celebrate. Some look at it as another year older; another year closer to dying. Others look at is a just another year to celebrate living life," adds Smith.

"Birthdays are to rejoice and celebrate that we survived another year and are still ticking," says Kevin Garvey, senior, Stamford. "Plus, it gives you another reason to party and drink," adds Garvey.

Sacred Heart students seem to have a basic understanding of why we celebrate birthdays. Birthdays are the anniversary of the day we were born. There is a small history behind the birthday celebration though.
