The Sacred Heart Women's Lacrosse team battled all the way to the end, but fell short against Wagner in an NEC matchup on Friday, 13-11.
Wagner junior Heather George tallied six goals to lead the Seahawks to victory, who now improve to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in the NEC.
The loss pushes Sacred Heart to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
"Unfortunately it was a tough loss, but Wagner came out strong and played well. We proved to ourselves that we can fight back, but in this case it just wasn't enough," said Heather Gureckis (sophomore, Nashua, NH) who was recently named student athlete of the week.
Wasting no time, the Seahawks came out firing on all cylinders, dominating the first half by a score of 8-1.
Wagner scored seven straight goals before Katie Salamone (freshmen, Baltimore, MD) put Sacred Heart on the board.
The half would end with the Pioneers down by seven and being out shot 17-8.
Sacred Heart came out with a statement in the second half as Natalie Smith (senior, Wantagh, NY) started the comeback with a goal and Brianna Bubeck (sophomore, Bethlehem, NY) also put in two.
With 15 minutes to play the Seahawks lead 10-6, before Gureckis scored twice for the Pioneers and Maureen Hohn (sophomore, Lutherville, MD) added another goal to cut the lead to one.
The Seahawks quickly responded with some offense of their own scoring two unanswered goals making it a three-point lead. That would prove to be the backbreaker for Sacred Heart, as a late goal by Smith was not enough.
Sacred Heart outshot Wagner 24-8 in the second half after being dominated in the first half. The Pioneers get back into action at home on Friday April 22, against St. Francis at 4 p.m.
