The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team, left Saturday's game against Drexel University with another loss on their record after they lost by a final score of 7-6.
This loss gives them an overall record of 4-6 total as they have yet to win a game at home this season.
"At this point the teams that we have lost to are all ranked in the top 25 of division one and if you give them chances, they will take them," said head coach Tom Mariano.
The cooperation and teamwork that the Pioneers played with allowed them to take hold of the lead early in the game.
The game got off to a slow start, with the first goal being scored almost 10 minutes in. Sacred Heart opened up with the first goal of the game scored by sophomore Kevin Kimball (Framingham, MA). Sacred Heart was strong and dominated the majority of the game.
The Drexel University Dragons brought the score to 4-1 when they were finally able to penetrate SHU's goal in the 28th minute mark by sneaking one past goalie Thomas Hind (junior, Farmingdale, NY).
"Our goal every day is to play sixty minutes and execute to the best of our abilities," said Mariano. "There is always frustration when you lose and at the same time you have to continue to learn from your mistakes."
The second half was much more of a battle for the Pioneers. The Dragons stepped up their game at the start of the third quarter, leaving the Pioneers struggling to hold on to their lead.
Drexel quickly scored two more goals, making the score 4-3. Sacred Heart answered back when Christian Lynch (Northport, NY) scored a goal. However, Drexel scored two more following Lynch's goal, and left the quarter with a tie score of 5-5.
The fourth and final quarter was opened up with a breakaway play that allowed the Pioneers to regain their lead, but that would be the last SHU goal for the game.
Drexel University found a way to snake through the Pioneers defense, and scored two goals to seal the win in the last six minutes of game time
"We will continue to work hard and try to reach our goal," said Mariano.
Sacred Heart travels to Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, April 16 for their next game.
