Shhh! No thoughts. No words. Just listen. Nine time Stanley Cup winner with three different teams. The coach with the most regular season wins (1,244) and playoff wins (223) in NHL history while coaching for over thirty seasons. Yeah, it's safe to say that Scotty Bowman is the supermodel of legends, the Cindy Crawford of ice hockey.
So with uncontrollable jubilation, the Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team has announced that THE Scotty Bowman will be speaking on April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Trumbull Marriot at the annual Ice Hockey banquet. Better yet, everyone is invited.
"We are very fortunate to have a hockey person of Scotty Bowman's stature and reputation join us at our banquet this year. I am certain his message to our staff, players and fans will be both insightful and entertaining," said Sacred Heart men's ice hockey head coach Shaun Hannah.
How often does one have the chance to hear a legend speak? Most of the legends are read about in books or heard about in stories from fathers. Here is a chance to listen to a coach that dedicated himself to winning, and accomplished more in the world of professional hockey then anyone ever has, and learn a thing or two about life along the way.
In Detroit, where he coached from 1993-2002 and won three of his nine Stanley Cups, he helped transform a community into a true "hockeytown." He brought them their first cup in 42 years. Bowman also won a Stanley Cup coaching Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992, and won five Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadians as they dominated the 1970's. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
"It's really exciting to have an NHL legend come speak, I love Scotty Bowman, Scotty Bowman is the man!" said senior Patrick Sullivan (Mullica Hill, NJ).
"I think its an excellent opportunity to gain advice and inspiration from a true legend," said senior Jasmine Urbas (Pickering, Ontario).
After winning his record ninth Stanley Cup in 2002, Bowman retired with two Jack Adams awards for coach of the year, and a winning spirit that will live on forever in hockey history.
Bowman now continues to be a part of the Detroit Red Wings organization as an advisor, and in coming to Sacred Heart to speak on April 26, he brings his legacy, his knowledge, and his incredible ability to turn people into champions, some advice that just might make us all walk out feeling like winners.
