For six years now Sacred Heart students have acted as mentors for the children of Luis Munoz Marin School in Bridgeport.

The Mi Amigo Mentor program, co-run by Matt Robinson and Elizabeth Bangs, places Sacred Heart student mentors with elementary kids from Bridgeport. The children range from 3rd to 5th grade and lack a mentor or guide in their lives.

"In many cases, these children attain early breakfast and stay for many after school programs, so they are in the school building up to 10 hours a day. Since they are without much personal attention, they benefit greatly with a mentor. Our program is comparable to 'Big Brother,'" said Robinson, "We also take the kids on all expenses paid field trips. In the past, we have gone to see plays, bowling, field day, and have the kids come to campus for the internal festival in March."

Approximately 20 Sacred Heart students are currently participating in the mentor program this semester. The program is being offered as a work-study or learning service for those who are interested in getting involved. The only real requirement is that you go to the school for at least 2 hours a week for the whole school year. The program has had a good history and those involved have gotten great enjoyment out of their time with the children.

"I enjoy the program because it gives me a chance to leave campus and forget about my college problems and work with a child and see them progress," said Robinson.

The program is a great way to learn how to interact with children at an elementary school level. For those students who are pursuing a career in teaching or you just want to work with children, the Mi Amigo Mentor program is great experience in preparing for your future job and is a great résumé filler.

Students participating in the program have given up a great deal of their time in order to benefit the lives of others. This is a true example of how the students at Sacred Heart can help better our neighborhood and make a difference in the community.

The Mi Amigo Mentor program is just one of numerous other volunteer and service-learning opportunities. There are various other programs being offered through the OSLVP (Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs). To find out how you can get involved search the OSLVP on the official Sacred Heart University website.
