It's that time again; the sororities and fraternities of Sacred Heart University started to recruit new potential brothers and sisters.
The process started off with Around the Worlds that was on Monday, Jan. 28. During Around the Worlds, the sororities and fraternities informed students about what the sororities and fraternities are about and discussed the meaning behind them.
They discussed the colors, symbols and quotes that describe them. After Around the Worlds, was Meet the Sororities and Fraternities, where you chose your top three choices and get to know more about the organization. This was a way to get to know the members of the fraternity or sorority before making your final choice.
"Our theme for rush this school year is 'Leave A Legacy,' which perfectly defines how beneficial joining Greek Life can be," said Julia LaRosa, sister of Nu Epsilon Omega.
"There are many powerful and noteworthy people that have been in fraternities and sororities, from Bill Clinton to Stephen Spielberg, Kate Spade to JP Morgan," she said.
"Not to mention graduate schools and employers love seeing it on an application because it shows commitment and dedication. Through the community service we perform, the philanthropies we help, and the friendships and networking skills we acquire, Greek Life is truly an investment in your future," she said.
There are ten Greek organizations on the Sacred Heart campus including six different sororities with six different causes.
The sororities are Beta Delta Phi, who supports breast cancer awareness, Zeta Iota Lambda, who supports disability awareness, Kappa Phi, who helps Bridgeport children, Nu Epsilon Omega, who supports suicide awareness and domestic violence prevention, Phi Omega Tau, who supports aids awareness, and Delta Phi Kappa, who supports women empowerment.
There are also four fraternities, who are, Alpha Sigma Psi, who addresses the issue of child abuse and poverty in Bridgeport, Lambda Sigma Phi, who supports rape prevention and sexual abuse awareness, Omega Phi Kappa, who supports furthering the Bridgeport education system, and Sigma Delta Chi, who supports helping the environment.
"I'd say that someone should go to rush if it's something they want," said Alan Macedino, brother of Omega Phi Kappa. "Being a member of a Greek organization has endless benefits. It helps you grow as a person and a leader, it provides a network which is hard to find elsewhere, it is a good way to get involved in campus, and it is a lifelong brotherhood or sisterhood."
In order to get involved in Greek Life you have to attend "Around the Worlds" and "Meet the Sororities or Fraternities." By attending these events students get to learn more about each Greek organization and which one fits you best. Students get the opportunity to learn everything they need to know about Greek life when attending these events.
"Greek Life provides students with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Not only are fraternity and sorority members dedicated leaders in their respective organizations, but they also hold various leadership positions on campus," said Jane Sanders, director of Greek Life.
Greek Life is just one of the ways for students to get involved in the Sacred Heart community, as well as the local community, and will allow you to build a bond that will last a life time.
