There is no limit that can't be reached by the women's swim team.
The Pioneers set two school records on Saturday and went on to defeat the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a score of 100-42.
Katie Marshall, freshman, Cumberland, RI, set a record in the 100 yard butterfly event for the third time this season. On Saturday, Marshall recorded a time of 1:00.93, and a season best record.
"Records are always important, we use them as a gauge to determine our diligence in practice and determination in our meets, in both individual and relay events," said Coach Richard Ludemann, "The simple fact that we have set and reset 8 records shows our dedication and goal oriented team."
Not only was Marshall recognized for setting a new record in her individual event, the relay team for the medley race also set a new school record.
The team of Johannah Kos, sophomore, Feeding Hills, Mass., Laura Johnson, senior, Red Hook, N.Y., Molly McDonald, freshman, Sag Harbor, N.Y., and Marshall set the record at 1:59.09.
"I am very excited that I have been able to set two new school records as a freshman, I never expected that this would happen," said Marshall.
This past weekend's win evened the Pioneer's record at 1-1 for the new season.
"Any time you have a W in the win column it's a plus psychologically. Our team functions as a unit so all components are vital to each win we have. With our next meet this upcoming weekend, I sincerely think it [last weeks win] will be a spark to launch us forward yet again," said Ludemann.
The Pioneers have been working hard this season to improve upon last year's record.
"I think we have improved as a team with a unified goal," said Ludemann. "We have set the bar and we have to keep raising it weekly as we get stronger and faster. The fact that all of my athletes are at practice at 5:15 a.m. and ready to 'get it done' shows unique focus, both with the team and individual goals."
At last weekend's meet, the Pioneers captured the win by placing first in 8 out of the eleven events against NJIT.
"Overall, as a team we have come far and if our efforts keep up we will have many more wins in the future," said Jackie Balder, freshman, Levittown, N.Y.
The last relay of the day was the 200-free relay that started off strong for the Pioneers.
After a strong lead from the Highlanders, Sacred Heart pushed forward in the second and third legs of the relay, taking the advantage going into the final leg. NJIT's Teresa Higgins out-swam the Pioneers in the final leg of the relay in order to record for the Highlanders.
"I think the key to this past Saturday's win is the diversity and focus in our team. We have all levels of athletes and in doing so it gives us much needed flexibility in meet situations like this past weekend," said Ludemann.
The Pioneers will return to the pool when they host their first meet of the season this Saturday at the University of Bridgeport. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. when the Pioneers take on Manhattan and the University of Bridgeport.
